We are all familiar with what it feels like to be “stressed-out”. When life seems to become too much, when we feel like we can’t keep up and when the pressures placed upon us seem insurmountable…….we experience that all too familiar feeling of stress! Unfortunately, stress for most of us is simply a way of life.
When we experience stress, our bodies respond as though we are in danger. It makes hormones that speed up our heart, make us breathe faster, and give us a burst of energy. High levels of stress can have a taxing effect on some of our most major organs such as the heart, kidneys and adrenal glands. We know that when we are under a lot of stress, we get headaches, our neck and shoulders tighten and we may even experience an upset stomach. Long-term stressful situations can produce a lasting, low-level stress that’s hard on people.
At times it may feel as if there is nothing we can do about the stress in our lives. However, we may have more control over it than we think. Perhaps the best way to deal with stress is to learn how to manage it. Here are a few suggestions to remember when you are trying to reduce the stress in your life: Get a good night’s sleep. Getting enough sleep helps keep your body and mind in great shape and will help you deal better when those negative stressors come upon you.
Be realistic. Don’t try to be perfect. Nobody is. Don’t expect perfection out of yourself or others.
Take a stand on over scheduling. Decide which activities in your life are most important and consider cutting out extra activities to simplify your life.
Watch what you’re thinking. Be positive and always look for the good.
Learn how to relax. Take time for yourself and let your body relax!
